Fortis Mohali saves patient with robot-assisted kidney surgery

A team of doctors at Fortis Hospital, led by Dr Dharmender Aggarwal, saved a 56-year-old man from a complicated cancer on his transplanted kidney, by performing robot-assisted surgery. The team used da Vinci surgical robot to remove the cancerous tumor from the upper pole of the patient's transplanted kidney while preserving its renal function.

The patient had lost both kidneys due to renal failure caused by chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension, and had undergone a kidney transplant in 2018. The kidney was donated to him by his sister, and he had regularly visited the hospital for check-ups after that. However, the COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges to visiting the hospital for regular follow-ups. Three years later, on evaluation at Fortis Hospital, it was found that the patient had developed a tumor on his transplanted kidney.
