The fountain pen or rollerball is crafted in vermeil silver and depicts a hand-enameled, five-clawed Imperial Dragon that wraps around the pen body. A backdrop of steam clouds harkens to the dragon's traditional association with water, steam, and clouds. The red lacquer background is an auspicious color in Chinese society, and color enameling and engraving along the dragon's body add further texture under a layer of semi-transparent enamel. The Imperial Dragon is finished with a precious ruby as its eye and a gold clip in the shape of a dragon in flight. The octagonal shape of the elaborate presentation box harkens to Chinese pagodas. The 18 karat gold Visconti nib with special engraving on this double-reservoir power-filler is available in widths of extra-fine, fine, medium, broad, or 1.1 mm stub. The Visconti Year of the Dragon is limited to 224 fountain pens or rollerballs.
MSRP: $5,995 fountain pen, $5,795 rollerball visconti.it, colesoflondon.com
The newest CYLINT cylinder-bodied metal writing instrument from Japan's Sailor is named Patina for good reason. The brown patina of the CYLINT Patina cartridge/converter-filling fountain pens and capped ballpoints are created using a coloring technique that has been used in Toyama Prefecture, Japan, for over 400 years. Hanmon-Kujyaku ("Mottled Peacock") is an original color that involves heating various chemicals on the brass barrel and cap to bring out vivid colors that develop a natural patina with use. It is matched to a black PMMA resin cap finial and section threads, an antiqued gold-plated section, and antiqued brass accents including the Sailor clip. The Sailor CYLINT Patina fountain pen has a 21 karat gold Sailor nib in fine, medium, or broad.
MSRP: $690 fountain pen, $390 ballpoint Contact your authorized Sailor retailer.
