During the pandemic and the lockdown, more and more people tried to raise awareness about Indian craftsmanship and extend support to local artisans. Today we have a horde of stars from home turf and International arenas who’ve made it their mission to raise awareness about the beauty of handcrafted Indian ensembles that speak volumes of India’s rich culture, heritage and traditions. Dia Mirza is one of the torchbearers when it comes to backing homegrown brands. She’s proud that they not only are sustainable but also represent the glory of India. Excerpts from a conversation with the star, who offers her perspective on why being vocal for locals is the need of the hour.
WHY DO YOU THINK A SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE IS NECESSARY IN THESE CHANGING TIMES?
In a world that has created a climate emergency that impacts people and the planet it is necessary for us to make conscious choices and alter our patterns of consumption. Sustainability is the only way forward. But what remains most necessary is reduced consumption and conscious consumption. The fast fashion industry is polluting more than the aviation industry.
WHY IS IT THAT ONLY POST COVID PEOPLE SUDDENLY REALISE THE URGENCY OF AN ETHICAL APPROACH TO EVERYTHING ABOUT OUR LIFESTYLE?
Perhaps the anthropogenic pause led to the stark realisation that human health was connected with the planet’s health. And the evidence of clean air, rejuvenation of wild spaces and over improvements in the natural world during that time made people realise that human behaviour was directly responsible for pollution.
