It may not be just your sweet tooth that causes cavities and gum disease — a new study from Cornell University found that starchy foods might also contribute to bad news at the dentist’s office.

In the study, the scientists discovered a link between people with a high number of copies of a gene called AMY1 — that affects starch digestion.

The number of AMY1 gene copies varies among individuals, from as few as two to as many as 20. People with more copies of the gene produce more amylase, an enzyme found in saliva that helps break down starchy foods.
