“Not since cochlear implants were invented 60 years ago has there been an effective treatment for deafness,” raves researcher and Harvard Medical School Professor Zheng-Yi Chen.
The first clinical trial of the treatment involved children who had a type of genetic hearing loss called DFNB9. It’s caused by mutations of the OTOF gene, which leads to a failure to produce a functioning otoferlin protein. Otoferlin is needed to transmit sound signals from the ear to the brain.
