Buckingham Palace marked King Charles III’s 74th birthday last week by releasing a beautiful and intimate portrait that captured his love of the natural world. His Majesty was pictured leaning against an ancient oak tree at Windsor, dressed in a tweed jacket, a striped tie and camel cord trousers.
It seemed fitting that the King, a longtime campaigner for various environmental issues, was captured in a natural setting to celebrate his first birthday as our sovereign.
The setting of the portrait was also chosen to tie in with the palace’s announcement that he has officially taken over from his father, Prince Philip, as the Park Ranger of Windsor Great Park. The caption with the photo said, “His Majesty The King has become Park Ranger of Windsor Great Park, 70 years after his father, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, was appointed to the post.
The role can be traced to 1559, when Sir Henry Neville was appointed during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Over the last 460 years, the post has usually been held by the sovereign or family members, including the King’s father and grandfather.”
