LOVE STORY
As “Posh and Becks”, Victoria and David Beckham were rarely off the front pages of the papers in the 1990s and 2000s. But Brand Beckham has come a long way since then and they’re finally ready to share their story in their own words.
With their new four-part docuseries airing this week, the former England captain and his pop star wife are giving the world a no-holds-barred look into their life together. And while it’s a shrewd move to cement their future status as icons while making them relatable again, it will also have served as a cathartic exercise for the couple, according to those in the know.
Letting their guards down and the cameras in, Victoria and David open up about everything from their first kiss (in a car park, no less) to some of the more difficult times that could easily have broken them.
Appearing emotional at times, a usually stoic Victoria, 49, admits filming the documentary was sometimes “stressful” because it forced her to confront painful memories she had long buried. In particular, she had to revisit the kidnap threats made against their newborn son Brooklyn and the vitriol dished out to David, 48, following his famous sending-off during England’s 1998 World Cup match against Argentina.
But while the former Spice Girl may have found it hard – back then and while reliving her past anguish – it seems those tough times have helped strengthen the couple’s bond.
“She was the biggest reason that I got through that time,” David says, referring to Victoria’s loyal support after the unprecedented World Cup backlash when “the whole country hated me”.
