THE COSTUME DESIGNER GETS CANDID ABOUT FAMILY LIFE WITH HUSBAND BAZ LUHRMANN

Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin are Australia’s most glamorous husband-and-wife filmmaking duo, yet at home, they are just Mum and Dad.

“We are close to being cancelled by our children or – in their view – cancelled by the world for our old-fashioned tragic behaviour or views,” says Martin with a laugh.

When the 58-year-old posts something to her 50,000 followers on Instagram, she says her children, Lilly, 20 and William, 18, react. “They go, ‘Oh my God, that is just so bad, Mum. Don’t say that.’”

Even Martin’s four Oscars fail to impress at home. “It doesn’t play because I have an 18- and a 20- year old who really don’t care. Both Dad and I are hopeless. We’re just an embarrassment. I’m sure many other parents have the same experience,” she tells WHO at the Red Sea International Film Festival where Luhrmann, 61, was jury president.

At least her husband is massively proud, remarking on his wife’s Oscar wins during his opening speech. As both costume and production designer on all of Luhrmann’s films, juggling parenting hasn’t been easy.
