Coconut Relay Race

Venkat and Gayatri were eager to go to there because their father, Mr Iyengar, had told them that the festivities were being held in honour of the humble coconut!

Seeing his kids' bewildered expressions he said, "Coconut is no ordinary fruit. It is generally considered to be a dry fruit, like a nut, but it is a fruit of the drupe species. They are pitted fruits like plum, peach, cherry, mango, and so on," he explained.

Venkat and Gayatri still did not understand the significance of coconut and asked, "What is the deal that gives it so much importance?"

Mr Iyengar smiled and said, "Coconut trees are unique because they grow in coastal areas and sandy soil. They are sturdy to withstand strong winds and sunlight. We can also call them the superheroes of nature."

"Every part of the coconut tree is useful. Coconut water is full of nutrients. The coconut kernel is rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals. It is a natural energy booster and is used to cook a variety of dishes. The coir on top of the coconut used to make ropes, mats and mattresses. The wood of the coconut tree is used for making houses and furniture, and brooms are made from its leaves. The hard shell of its fruit can be used to make decorative items. Coconut trees are also called the 'tree of life' because they provide food, shelter, and many types of raw materials. Also, coconut oil is very beneficial for hair and skin."

Venkat and Gayatri realised that coconut indeed had many qualities and their father could go on talking about them forever. However, they now wanted to reach the sports club as soon as possible to participate in the new competition that was being introduced this year.

The fun part of the competition was that both children and adults could participate in the coconut relay race.
