The Kathasaritsagar has a story about a person called Shaktideva who was swallowed whole by a fish. Once upon a time, a king's daughter said she would only marry a man who had seen the legendary Golden City. Shaktideva wanted to marry her and so, he went travelling around the world seeking help from someone who could tell him where this Golden City was. During one of his journeys, he boarded a ship bound for the island of Utsthala where the king of the fishermen lived. Shaktideva hoped the king would set him on the right track. But, during his voyage, his ship was destroyed by a great storm. Shaktideva was thrown off the ship and a great fish swallowed him whole. The fish reached the island of Utsthala where it was seized by the servants of the king of the fishermen. Curious about its size, the king asked for the fish to be cut open. Shaktideva came out of the fish, untouched and unhurt.
