When you take a bite of food or a sip of a drink, the digestive process actually begins in your mouth. Chewing your food thoroughly not only breaks it down into smaller, more manageable pieces but also allows your saliva to mix with it. Enzymes such as amylase in saliva start breaking down carbohydrates, initiating the digestion process. By rushing through your meals, you bypass this crucial step, putting extra strain on your digestive system.
