They've set new benchmarks, sparked conversations, and shattered expectations with their fearless artistry and innovation. Whether breaking records or challenging norms, these disruptors have left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of not just the country, but the world. For them, being cool isn't a choice it's second nature.
Kiran Rav
There's an undeniable coolness about Kiran Rao. She listens to Gorillaz, her hair is a striking shade of fresh lilacs, and her demeanour is warm yet effortless. Her style? Unconventional, and she seems blissfully unaware of her own 'It' girl status. But make no mistake - she is an 'It' girl, even without considering the fact that she's one of the most celebrated film directors today. Case in point: Her latest film, Laapataa Ladies, has been selected as India's official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.
It's the day after the announcement, and while Rao is clearly thrilled, she's also keeping her composure. "For me, success especially in a field like mine, which is so tied to box office numbers - is about how much one connects with an audience. That said, it's also about how the people I work with feel. A film achieving its artistic purpose is more important than its commercial success," she shares.
Rao may have directed only two films so far, but her track record of producing critically acclaimed indie hits and contributing to commercial successes makes it clear she's a force to be reckoned with in the industry.
Beyond her directorial achievements, she's also served as the chairperson for the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival and is actively involved with the Paani Foundation, a non-profit working to combat droughts in Maharashtra. And as for her style, she's Raw Mango's muse for a reason.
