• Causes of Shingles:
The primary cause of shingles is the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the same virus responsible for chickenpox. Several factors may contribute to it:
• Weakened Immune System: A weakened immune system can increase the risk of shingles. This can occur due to aging, underlying medical conditions (such as HIV/AIDS or cancer), or medications that suppress the immune system (such as corticosteroids or chemotherapy drugs).
• Aging: As people age, their immune system may become less effective at controlling latent viruses like the varicella-zoster virus. This makes older adults more susceptible to shingles.
• Stress: Physical or emotional stress may weaken the immune system and trigger the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus in some individuals.
• Injury or Trauma: Trauma or injury to the nerves where the varicella-zoster virus is dormant may sometimes lead to shingles in that area.
• Underlying Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions that affect the immune system or nerve function may increase the risk of shingles. These conditions include autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and cancer.
