Equanimity

Equanimity means calmness of mind, ' evenness of mind. In Patanjali Yoga Sutra and in Srimad Bhagavad Gita, equanimity is the main goal of a striver. The Gita says that uneven-mindedness (partiality), desire, selfishness, and ego are the causes of sin.

In Patanjali Yoga Sutra, control of the mind has been called yoga - 'Yogah Citta Vritti Nirodah,' (Yoga Sutra 1.2).

Maharishi Patanjali further states "Tada Drastuh Svarupe Avasthana" (YS 1.3) - as a result of this yoga, the Seer rests in the Self. We can further elaborate on these Sutras. Maharshi Patanjali says yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind. The Sutra stresses being in control of the mind and being able to recognize that the mind is not always allowing you to see what the truth is..

There are five stages of Chitta

1. Kshipta - Restless, agitated

2. Mudha - Stupefied, dull

3. Vikshipta-Distracted

4. Ekagra One-pointed

5. Niruddha - Controlled
