You can even investigate if an attic or loft conversion is a possibility for a master suite, study, kids' room, or play area. You'll be amazed at how spacious and efficient the most compact dwelling can seem, while still reflecting all the warmth and personality you want in a home.

Who cares if it isn't set on acreage and doesn't have a butler's pantry? Remember - good things come in small packages!

1 CLEAN LINES

Take advantage of the natural alcoves on either side of a formal fireplace to add display shelving and precious storage without taking up valuable living space. Emphasise the room's pleasing sense of symmetry with the square lines of the sofa, rug, and coffee table, but don't get too 'measured' add soft furnishings and a plant or two.

2 DIVIDE AND CONQUER

It might seem counterintuitive to divide a large open-plan area but a part wall of glass between your kitchen and living room defines the area without losing light or a sense of space and connectedness.

And, when you want to contain the noise and cooking smells, or family members want to do different things, close it off fully with folding or recessed doors, for 'separate' rooms that are a boon.

3 LET'S DINE TOGETHER

You don't need a separate dining room - just define the meals area with a pendant light over the table. Add a simple, well-placed mirror to open up the room behind.
