HOW TO AVOID THE WRONG BUILDER FOR YOUR PROJECT

Finding the right builder for your job is never that easy — especially if you’re starting a new search for the first time. As I have mentioned many times in this magazine, a good relationship with your builder is absolutely vital in delivering a successful build. So what are the giveaway signs that they’re not the right builder for you and your project?

My first piece of advice is to trust your gut instinct when meeting a potential builder for the first time. Do you have good rapport during this initial meeting? One worrying sign, for instance, is if a builder can start your project straight away. Depending on the trade, most decent contractors will be booked up a good three to six months in advance – if not more during present times when good builders and tradespeople are still busy that ever.

Admittedly there could be a very good reason why they might be immediately available – such as delays on other jobs – but this will generally be unlikely. So if they happen to be conveniently and suddenly free, don’t hesitate to ask why. You can also ask to have a look at the job they are currently working on. You can even ask to speak to the client they’re working for. A good builder will only be too happy to answer such questions.
