There is nothing more satisfying than creating something trendy, that has that store-bought look, using simple items and materials like scrap wood pieces. I've loved the trend of textured artwork and really wanted to create something similar but to use my ever-growing piles of off-cut or scrap wood pieces. I was chuffed to put these scrap wood pieces to such good use, as in my workshop every piece of wood is saved and added to the 'save for later' stack.
Time to complete:
+-4 hours
Tools needed:
• Jigsaw
• Orbital Sander with 120 grit sanding paper disk
• Wood filler and scraper
• Wood Stain
• Off-white paint
• Textured granule paint (Pot or outdoor paint)
• Paint brush
• Wood glue
• Spreader clamps or heavy objects (books or plants)
• Measuring tape and pencil
• Sawtooth hanger and short wood screws
• Appropriate safety gear: gloves, ear plugs, glasses and safety shoes
Materials required:
• Various sizes and shapes of off-cut or scrap pine wood
• Masonite board (size used for this project 600mm x 900mm
• Pine cover strips used from the framing, cut at 45° angle.
Steps to Follow
1| Using a circular saw, jigsaw or handsaw and mitre box to cut the pine wood cover strips used to create the frame of your DIY artwork. For this project a 45-degree mitre angle was cut on the ends of the measured lengths of wood to be used as the frame. You may also opt to make a frame using straight cuts and use a basic butt joint.
Cut list of pine cover strips to frame sides:
2 x 8 mm x 44 mm x 600 mm
