A unified mix of interior design styles can add personality to a home, put a fresh spin on tired archetypes and give spaces new life. When interior designer Sarah Tham was asked to give this four-level abode in Bukit Timah a makeover, she deftly applied a considered selection of east-meets-west touches to suit its owners’ personal preferences and leisurely pursuits. The result is effortlessly harmonious spaces that flaunt their cultural sensibilities proudly, making for a comfy, classic home that is warmly welcoming and eminently liveable.
The semi-detached house is home to a family of three. The husband is the director of a local firm, and the wife is a New Zealander who has lived here for many years; one of the couple’s grown-up daughters currently stays with them. “The clients wanted a cosy and elegant home with a western outlook mixed with eastern elements,” says Tham, design director of Cube Associate Design. The wife is also a big fan of American designer Barbara Barry’s effortless Californian style and her eponymous furniture brand; this partiality informed the home’s overarching aesthetic of a refined, classic look that also sports a distinct modernity.
Entering the house through the basement leads one to the welcoming, brightly lit foyer. This space also acts as the family den and reading corner, and features a TV, full-length bookcase, and a plush couch.
