
On a mundane level is the dropped toast always landing buttered side down or the long wait at the bus stop before all the buses arrive at once. ‘Sod’s Law,’ you will cry, as tomato sauce spurts on to your clean, white T-shirt and ‘Sod’s Law’ you will groan, as I have recently done, when your holiday fails to work out quite as planned.
Having spent all summer in the damp, cool English countryside without a fix of warmth and sunshine, we booked a last-minute holiday to the island of Spetses in Greece. The day before we left, the British news was full of an impending September heatwave. ‘Sod’s Law,’ you could hear all those poor parents say as they carted their children back to school in stifling heat. We shrugged and didn’t give it much thought, knowing we were off to sunny Greece.
