Gone are the days when you’d line up for hours to purchase tickets to see your favourite band, but while online marketplaces mean access to tickets has expanded, it’s also led to a rise in scams. Ticket purchasing site

Ticketek crashed last week as Taylor Swift fans scrambled to secure tickets to her Sydney and Melbourne shows.

Over a million would-be concertgoers registered for the sought-after tickets, so there were many broken-hearted fans who missed out.

Now, experts like Kate Pattison, PhD Candidate in Music Industry at RMIT University, are warning fans desperate to see their favourite artists not to fall for ticket scams.

She warns fraudsters can target fans via social media, claiming their ‘aunty’ or ‘friend’ are selling tickets.

“The digital nature of pop music fandoms like this also means that it could be more accessible for scammers to reach out to fans who have been seeking out tickets,” she explains. “You’ll often see comments across TikTok, Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms, telling fans their ‘aunty’ or ‘friend’ has tickets to sell, and to message them for information.
