Cartier’s Grain de Café was first launched in 1938 under the creative direction of the ingenious Jeanne Toussaint, who recognised the potential abundance of the universe in this motif. The collection shot to fame in the ‘50s and ‘60s thanks to Hollywood icons Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, who were frequently spotted wearing its pieces.
As implied by the name, the collection draws inspiration from the ordinary coffee bean and transforms itWs straightforward oblong shape into a repeating theme in fine jewellery. The exquisitely crafted flora in yellow gold and the transformation of the mundane into something valuable served as the collection’s two chief sources of inspiration.
