During lunch at a beauty event, a group of us – beauty writers and editors – found ourselves deep in conversation about injectables. Terms like Botox, skin boosters and fillers dominated the discussion, with many sharing stories of travelling overseas specifically for these treatments. Popular destinations included South Korea and Thailand. South Korea, in particular, is renowned as a haven for beauty procedures, thanks to the ubiquity of clinics and more competitive prices compared to local options. Plus, pairing these treatments with a short vacation in Seoul or Bangkok makes for an appealing getaway.
Among the current favourites are injectables like Profhilo, Rejuran and Belotero Revive. Unlike Botox, which primarily targets muscle movement to reduce wrinkles, these treatments focus on hydrating the skin and boosting collagen production from within. Dr Ngiam Juzheng, medical director of J Laser & Aesthetics Clinic, explains, “Botox works by selectively relaxing certain facial muscle groups to reducedynamic fine lines and wrinkles.” While Botox offers smoother, wrinkle-free results, its effects – lasting three to four months – can sometimes appear slightly stiff or unnatural. Additionally, Botox has gained a reputation as a more “traditional” choice, often associated with older clientele.
On the other hand, skin boosters are gaining popularity for their hydrating and glow-enhancing benefits. “Most skin boosters contain hyaluronic acid, which, when injected into the appropriate layer of skin, draws in water and creates a more hydrated, glowy appearance,” says Dr Shauna Tan, an aesthetic doctor at David Loh Surgery. Hyaluronic acid acts like a sponge, attracting and retaining water, making it highly effective for improving fine lines, uneven texture, and dull, dry skin.
