The Morgan Garden reopened its charming spaces on Friday, May 5th to the public. This American Renaissance masterpiece, completed in 1906, is the historic heart of the Morgan Library & Museum.
The Morgan Library & Museum is an independent research library located in the heart of New York City. As early as 1890 Pierpont Morgan began to assemble a collection of illuminated, literary, and historical manuscripts, early printed books, and old master drawings and prints. It began as the personal library of the financier and collector.
Visitors to the Morgan are able to enjoy the Garden with museum admission every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, through October 29, 2023. The Garden will also remain open during Free Friday Nights from 5-7pm every Friday evening. In June 2022, the Morgan completed the first comprehensive exterior restoration of the library that J. Pierpont Morgan commissioned from architect Charles Follen McKim.
A boutique library
Mr. Morgan’s Library, as it was known in his lifetime, was built between 1902 and 1906 adjacent to his New York residence at Madison Avenue and 36th Street. Designed by Charles McKim of the architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, the Library was intended as something more than a repository of rare materials. While it is majestic in appearance, it has a very boutique intimate feel.
