Scattered along coastlines and across landscapes, central Scotland's stunning castles hold the secrets, turmoil and history of the nation within their ancient walls
Heart Of History

CENTRAL SCOTLAND boasts a wealth of castles steeped in history. From Stirling Castle, with its significant role in Scottish history and stunning views, to Doune Castle, famed for its onscreen appearances in Outlander and Monty Python And The Holy Grail, each fortress tells its own fascinating tale. Bothwell Castle and Kellie Castle are also must-visit destinations, providing insights into medieval life and architecture, and are enduring symbols of Scotland's rich heritage.

Dumbarton Castle

Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire

PERCHED atop Dumbarton Rock overlooking the River Clyde, Dumbarton Castle boasts a history dating back to its construction by Alexander II of Scotland in 1220. Originally erected as a defensive stronghold against potential Norse invasions, it stands as the oldest continually fortified site in Britain, spanning from the Iron Age to the Second World War.

With the old Brythonic name of Alt Clut, translating to the Rock of the Clyde, Dumbarton Rock has borne witness to numerous dramatic events throughout the centuries. One such occasion was the siege led by infamous Viking leader, Ivar the Boneless. Despite enduring a relentless 15-week assault, the sturdy walls of the castle held firm. However, the defenders faced a dire shortage of water, ultimately succumbing to the siege. The Vikings seized the stronghold, plundering its treasures and enslaving its inhabitants before departing with their spoils aboard 200 longships bound for Ireland.

A visit to Dumbarton Castle offers more than just a glimpse into its military past. Amid its rugged cliffs and ancient battlements, visitors can discover intriguing relics, such as the grotesque carving depicting Sir John "The False" Menteith.

Notorious for his alleged betrayal of William Wallace to the English, Menteith served as the Governor of Dumbarton Castle during Wallace's time.
