Castle Tioram
IT might not be one of Scotland's best-known castles, but its dramatic location certainly makes up for this. Situated on a rocky island called Eilean Tioram in Loch Moidart, Castle Tioram was built in the 13th century and was once home to Clan Ranald.
Donald, the 13th chieftain of Clanranald, ruled Castle Tioram in Lochaber in the 17th century - and was known as a madman. The story goes that Donald would stand atop the highest tower cradling his gun-dubbed The Cuckoo - and shoot anyone who came near. Fortunately, you won't get shot for visiting now!
Given its romantic ruins and picturesque setting, Castle Tioram is a popular location for wedding elopements. Many couples have tied the knot here.
