The Great Eight
The Auld Enemy football ties that live long in the memory
THE latest chapter in world football's oldest rivalry will be written when Scotland take on England at Hampden Park on Tuesday September 12. The 150th Anniversary Heritage Match marks the first meeting between the sides in 1872. Since then there has been many a thrill, spill and knocked-over Bovril. The special match is part of a year-long calendar of events from the Scottish FA to celebrate the history of the association. Here are eight key moments from the fixture.
Chills And Thrills
The first-ever official international women's football match played in Britain was a Scotland vs England affair. The sides met at Ravenscraig Stadium, Greenock, on a bone-chilling Saturday in November 1972. England's Sylvia Gore, who scored first, recalled, "There was only one other game played in Scotland that day - a men's game - because the conditions were so bad." Mary Carr equalised before 17-year-old Rose Reilly put the Scots in front with a stunning goal direct from a corner. However, two late goals from Pat Davies meant the visitors won. Scotland captain Margaret McAulay missed the second half after pulling a ligament.
