In 1991, American alternative rock act Jane’s Addiction were contemplating the end of the band’s short but hugely influential first run. Frontman Perry Farrell put together a farewell tour—named Lollapalooza after an American idiomatic phrase meaning “an extraordinary or unusual thing, person, or event”— as a way to celebrate the band’s legacy. The tour’s lineup—featuring alt-rock icons Siouxsie and the Banshees, industrial music titan Nine Inch Nails and Ice T’s cop-baiting rap-metal act Body Count—represented a cross-section of acts that existed outside of the mainstream status quo. As a farewell, it had mixed success: Farrell and guitarist David Navarro got into a fight on-stage at the very first Lollapalooza show. But as a tour it was a smash hit, spawning a music festival that has run for over 30 years—barring a small hiatus in the late ’90s and early Naughties— and become one of the world’s biggest live music events.
