Mention of 'zero' in conversation often leads to Aryabhatt, the mathematician-astronomer genius from the classical age of India, as its inventor. However, Gujarat University (GU) Vice Chancellor Neerja Gupta on Tuesday said that the western world-imposed information upon people of Bharat and zero or shunya was in existence even at the time of Mahabharata, much before Aryabhatt's time. Gupta said that Aryabhatt was the one who gave shape to the zero.
Gupta was one of the two chief guests at 60th Annual Convention of Gujarat Ganit (Mathematics) Mandal, at St Xavier's College. Indian Institute of Teacher's Education (IITE) VC Harshad Patel was the other guest speaker at the inaugural ceremony of the event.
