Veteran Gujarati singer, music composer and recipient of Padma Shri, Purushottam Upadhyay breathed his last in Mumbai. He was 90.
Upadhyay, known for popular Gujarati songs like Have mandir na barna, Mari koi dadkhi ma and several such soul-touching creations, was born on August 15, 1934, in Uttarsanada in Central Gujarat.
A protege of Avinash Vyas, a pioneer stalwart of Gujarati music, Upadhyay's contribution also included founding the Shruti Sansatha in 1961, the Sangati around 1978, the Sharavanika Kalasantha in 1981 and Kinnari, an organization exclusively for women singers, to bring Gujarati music's bright stars to life.
