Roadblocks keep J'gadh varsity waiting for VC

Public universities in Gujarat operating with in-charge vice chancellors for extended periods are not uncommon. However, the case of Bhakt Kavi Narsinh Mehta University, Junagadh, stands out as a curious example of bureaucratic entanglement that has left the institution without a full-term VC for nearly two years.

Despite the urgency, the state education department has failed to complete the formation of a search committee as mandated by the Gujarat Public Universities Act-2023 for over a year. This three-member committee, formed in October last year, still only has one 'legitimate' member, who also serves as its chairman. Repeated notifications about potential violations of the Act in the appointment of the other two members have gone unheeded, leaving the committee incomplete and unable to initiate the search for a full-term VC.

Committee in limbo
