Ahmedabad: Gujarat's jails are steadily becoming industrial units. The turnover of the Gujarat Prisons Industries Department has increased significantly. It rose from Rs 8,95,32,897 in the financial year 2017-18 to Rs 42,03,24,560 in the financial year 2023-24.
These industrial units, run by Gujarat's jails, include weaving, tailoring, carpentry, chemical production, and a bakery. They even include the famous Jail Bhajiya house near the RTO circle in Ahmedabad. This has shown a significant increase in turnover, from Rs 95,57,419 to Rs 1,00,54,677.
Petrol pump fuels growth However, the largest contributor to this rise in turnover is a petrol pump operated by the Vadodara Jail in the Danteshwar area.
