Hezbollah said its fighters were engaging Israeli forces inside Lebanon on Wednesday, reporting ground clashes for the first time since Israel began pushing into its northern neighbor to hammer the Iran-backed armed group.
The Israeli military said regular infantry and armored units were joining its ground operations in Lebanon, a day after Israel was attacked by Iran in a strike that raised fears that the oil-producing West Asia could be engulfed in a wider conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to retaliate, saying Iran "made a big mistake tonight and it will pay for it." President of ally US, Joe Biden, said his administration was "fully supportive" of Israel and that he's discussing with aides what the appropriate response should be.
Italy called for a Group of Seven (G7) leaders meeting on Wednesday amid worsening tensions in West Asia. Giorgia Meloni's government, which holds this year's G7 presidency, has consistently called for military de-escalation and a cease-fire in both Lebanon and Gaza.
