Amber, 26, competing just four months after giving birth to her first child, was involved in a thrilling showdown with Chile's Francisca Crovetto Chadid that ended in heartbreak.
The British crack-shot was judged to have missed one of two shots, but insisted that she had hit the target. Replays showed Amber had clipped the skeet - but Olympic rules do not allow decisions to be overturned and she had to settle for the silver medal.
Amber, the first British woman to win an Olympic medal in skeet, hugged son Tommy, who was draped in a Union Jack flag, at the end of the drama.
She was two shots behind Chadid, but had narrowed the gap to take the event to a shoot-out for the gold medal.
Chadid, 34, sealed Chile's first ever shooting medal with two hits.
Furious fans took to social media to complain about the judging.
But the silver medal added to another successful day in Paris for Team GB, with a silver in golf plus bronzes in dressage and gymnastics.
Southport golfer Tommy Fleetwood, 33, held his nerve to sink a tricky putt on the final green at Le Golf National to secure silver, one shot behind American world number one Scottie Scheffler.
Meanwhile, Lottie Fry continued Team GB's equestrian success story in Paris with bronze in the individual dressage.
