Rumours that private equity firm CVC Capital Partners is exploring a deal for ITV with a European broadcaster sent shares soaring.
ITV has traditionally relied on huge advertising revenue.
Yet an ageing audience and less reliable advertisers has seen share values plummet 42% in three years.
This has left ITV, which has also been rocked by scandal, with an uncertain future.
