CHARLES III has unveiled his first official portrait since becoming King - a vivid red depiction of him in the uniform of the Welsh Guards.

Artist Jonathan Yeo said he included a Monarch butterfly because it symbolised the "metamorphosis" from prince to king.

Charles, 75, who unveiled the giant portrait in Buckingham Palace's Blue Drawing Room, joked: "It was nice to know I was a chrysalis when you first met me. Well, thank you and congratulations. Fantastic."

He first sat for Yeo at Highgrove in June 2021 when he was still Prince of Wales. By the time of his fourth and final sitting at Clarence House he was the United Kingdom's monarch.
