Rishi: Price cap proof that we've turned corner

The Prime Minister said the reduction in the energy price cap - set by regulator Ofgem shows that "the economy has turned a corner" thanks to the Conservatives.

And his Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho insisted it proves Labour's reckless plans "to shut down our oil and gas sector" will leave families facing higher bills.

Sir Keir Starmer used a visit to Scotland to promote his strategy for a publicly-owned green electricity generator, as both major parties sought to win the war of words over energy policies yesterday.

Sir Keir claims his plan would cut bills and boost energy security.

But Ms Couinho set out her party's agenda, including maintaining the Ofgem cap in the next parliament to help keep household costs down.

It also aims to make price comparison services easier to use.

Bold

And Ofgem could publish league tables showing how long energy firms take to respond to customer complaints under the Tory proposals.

Mr Sunak declared: "Inflation is back to normal, wages have been rising faster than prices for almost a year and at the beginning of this year the economy grew at a very healthy rate. That's why now is the right time to think about our future.
