WE may not have found out what happened on that fishing trip but 12.3 MILLION of us tuned in to see Nessa and Smithy get their happily ever after on Gavin & Stacey.

The big finale of the much-loved BBC sitcom was the most-watched Christmas Day show since 2008.

Writers James Corden and Ruth Jones delivered in all departments, with fans alternating between tears and laughter in every scene.

James posted a photo of him and Ruth on Instagram just before the show aired, saying: "We had to be together to watch tonight... It has been the greatest privilege making this show over the past 17 years."
