730,000 999 CALL-OUTS WITHOUT A PARAMEDIC

STAFF shortages meant hundreds of thousands of 999 call-outs were not attended by fully-trained paramedics last year.

Instead, a total of 732,369 emergencies relied on ambulance technicians.

Paramedics are degree-qualified and can diagnose and treat a wide range of illnesses and injuries.

The figures were disclosed as junior doctors today start a record six-day strike over pay which will pile pressure on an over-stretched NHS.

Rachel Harrison, National Secretary of the GMB union, said the paramedic figures showed "the perilous state of our ambulance service".
