D-Day hero, 98, dies

ONE of the last surviving D-Day veterans has died just two weeks short of his 99th birthday.

Joe Turpin was an 18-year-old Royal Navy radio operator when his ship, HMS Ryde, arrived at Omaha beach on June 6, 1944.

HMS Ryde helped protect the harbour floating supply base called Mulberry, critical to success.

He said during the 80th anniversary events last month: "I'll never forget it, sixth June. I'll never forget it. What a waste of life. That's war.
