Trailblazing DJ dies aged 83
First lady of radio...

She was a ground-breaking DJ whose love of championing new music was as unmistakable as her husky voice.

Annie Nightingale, who has died aged 83, was the first female presenter on Radio 1. She also became the station's longest-serving broadcaster.

She was passionate about many types of music, including prog rock, punk, house and hip-hop.

Radio star Jo Whiley described Annie as "the coolest woman who ever graced the airwaves". She added: "She blazed a trail for us all and never compromised." BBC colleague Zoe Ball said Annie "loved music like no other".
