STILL coming to terms with the unimaginable horror they witnessed in Southport, 999 crews yesterday struggled to express their emotions.

But the Princess of Wales stepped in with a comforting hug as she and husband William listened to their terrible ordeals.

Kate had already chatted to the heroes of that terrible day but she was so moved by their experiences she returned to some to embrace them.

Before the emotional meeting, the couple broke royal protocol timings by spending an extra 45 minutes with the families of the three little girls stabbed to death at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in July.

They then moved on to Southport Community Centre to meet police, firefighters and paramedics on the surprise visit - their first official joint engagement since Kate finished cancer treatment in summer.
