THE ART OF WAR

A SECRET sketchbook kept by a British soldier depicting what life was like in Asian PoW camps has come to light, 79 years on.

Second Lieutenant Arkless Lockey spent three years of the Second World War in camps after being captured during the Fall of Singapore in 1942.

He filled a book with 33 detailed drawings that show the appalling treatment British PoWs endured at the hands of cruel prison guards.

Had the sketches ever been discovered, Lt Lockey would have been severely punished. One of his illustrations shows life in a typical PoW hut, with basic facilities and the men all shirtless because they were sweltering.
