Fears for pensioners who live in old damp homes

AXING winter fuel payments will leave millions of pensioners living in cold homes and could spark a national health emergency, Rachel Reeves has been warned.

More than 50 groups have written to the Chancellor urging her to reverse the decision to axe the vital aid to those not on benefits.

They include charities such as Scope and the MND Association, which warned pensioners being denied the £100 to £300 payment face rising energy bills of 15 per cent this winter as Ofgem's price cap is forecast to increase from October.
