JOSH Kerr woke with a banging head less than 12 hours after seeing his 1500m gold medal hopes given the boot by Cole Hocker's massive kick.
But the Scottish Olympic hero insists the pain was nothing to do with the agonising blow delivered by the American, which saw the title he so badly craved slip through his fingers in the final 30m of the race of his life.
Not much anyway.
It was more to do with the pints of lager he drained - his first since Christmas - after years of preparation for that moment.
Kerr wanted gold. He ended with silver. But as he guzzled the amber nectar into the wee hours, the Scot knew there was little more he could have done in the Stade de France.
Shaving over a second off his personal best, smashing Mo Farah's British record and becoming the first Scot to win medals on the Olympic track at two different Games are all consolations for the 26-year-old.
Not to mention beating nemesis Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the reigning Olympic champ not even finishing in the medal places.
It was a bleary-eyed Kerr who spoke to the Press at GB House at Pavillon D'Armenonville yesterday morning.
Asked if he'd allowed himself to unwind with a beer, he said: "With a press conference, drug testing and then meeting up with family and friends, we're talking minutes versus hours of sleep last night. But that's part of the Olympic process.
"We were... I don't know really where we were! But it was a bar with my brands, agents, managers, family members all there.
