But his predecessor, Daryl Powell, was in that position after winning all of Wolves’ opening eight matches last year.

And he was sacked before the end of July, so little wonder Burgess isn’t too fussed about looking too intently at the table just yet.

The ex-England captain is more bothered about the team – it was his ethos as a player and continues to be so as Super League’s youngest head coach.

Has anything surprised the superstar former South Sydney colossus after stepping up from being an NRL assistant?

Burgess, 35, said: “Not really. It’s everything I expected. I’ve always had a keen interest in what’s happening in the team environment.

“You get some funny ones with players, some funny interactions, but I’ve quite enjoyed all the weirdness about it.
