THE tax hit on Britain will rise after the election if the Tories win, Cabinet minister Michael Gove admitted today but he argued Labour would hike it by even more.
Leading economists have warned that whichever party wins, the tax burden is due to rise-partly due to the stealth tax freezes on thresholds for paying levies including income tax. Levellingup Secretary Mr Gove defended the Conservatives' record on raising taxes, including the threshold freezes announced by Rishi Sunak in the 2021 Budget, to deal with the Covid pandemic and later the impact of Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
