Total retail sales excluding fuel were up 5.9% year on year according to new data from Mastercard SpendingPulse, an index that measures in-store and online spending, with supermarkets and pubs and restaurants particularly benefiting.
Natalia Lechmanova, senior economist, Europe at Mastercard Economics Institute, said: “This spring, we have increasingly seen Brits prioritise spending on essential sectors such as grocery, and on restaurants making the most of the Coronation weekend and consecutive May bank holidays.
