The Competition and Markets Authority today identified big rises in the costs passed on to motorists when crude oil is turned into fuel at the pumps. It has launched a probe.
It said this so-called "refining spread" tripled over the last year, from 10p per litre to nearly 35p, adding 24p per litre to prices.
A formal market study into how the industry defines what motorists pay will follow and report back in the autumn.
The CMA started looking into pricing practices at the request of Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng to check that the 5p per litre cut to fuel duty announced by the Government was being passed on to consumers. While it was satisified that was happening "on the whole", its scrutiny raised a series of other concerns.
