₹13K-CR PUSH FOR ARTISANS, CRAFTSMEN | Digital India extended till FY26-end
Cabinet approves ₹57,000 cr plan for e-bus rollout

THE UNION CABINET on Wednesday approved a clutch of schemes and projects, entailing considerable spending over the next few years from not only the Central budget, but also from the coffers of the states and urban local bodies. The decisions, which reflected the policy thrust on physical and digital infrastructure, emission reduction and skill upgrade, include railway-track projects worth ₹32,500 crore, a ₹57,613-crore scheme to promote public private partnerships and purchases of 10,000 e-buses for 100 tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

The Cabinet also extended the Digital India programme, with an outlay of ₹14,903 crore for the five years to FY26-end.

Besides, the Cabinet also gave its stamp of approval to the ₹13,000-crore 'PM Vishwakarma' scheme, which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech on Tuesday.

Briefing the media, information and broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur said the new PPP scheme to roll out e-buses will include ₹20,000 crore viability gap funding (VGF) from the Centre. The balance of ₹37,613 crore funding will be provided by the state governments and urban local bodies.

The scheme, which will promote emobility and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, will be awarded to private parties through a competitive bidding process for the procurement of buses, maintenance and operation, he added. The VGF component will be provided to bus operators on per-km basis for ten years or till 2037, Thakur said. The scheme is meant for cities with a population between 0.3-4 million, and is expected to generate 45,000 to 55,000 direct jobs.
