INDIAN-ORIGIN M.I.T. STUDENT SUSPENDED OVER PRO-PALESTINE ESSAY IN MAGAZINE

NEW DELHI: Nearly 100 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) students and community members have urged the institute to revoke the suspension of PhD student and National Science Foundation fellow Indian-origin Prahlad Iyengar over a pro-Palestine essay he wrote in the student-run magazine.

Iyengar's suspension, issued on December 4, is under appeal to MIT chancellor Melissa Nobles. The suspension stemmed from an article Iyengar authored in the October issue of the student-run magazine "Written Revolution". Titled "On Pacifism", the article allegedly contained imagery and language that "could be interpreted as advocating violent or destructive protests", according to an email from MIT Dean of Student Life David Warren Randall.
